One of my goals this year is to try to do more of the MEC races. They are great grass roots races. I set that goal before the reality of training for a full ironman set in.
A couple of weeks ago I had a good discussion with my coach regarding what races I had registered for and if it was realistic or not. She suggested eliminating some things to prevent potential injury and to keep a better flow to my training schedule. I was glad she kept the race for today.

Emily, Missy and Zoey also did the race. I did 15km, Emily did 5km and Missy and Zoey did the 2km kids race.
The kids always go first and it is so much fun to watch the littles ones race. I love the smiles on their faces. Missy is getting pretty fast now and usually doesn't need anyone to go with her. Today though, she had her mom run with her. Zoey is still so little and needs to be carried a some of the way. Zoey was the youngest runner and the last one through. The race director was wanting to get the 15kers off, so we were all lined up at the start line when Zoey came through. She got the biggest cheers and when the director said she was only 2 there was a big 'AWWWWWW". I felt so proud of her. I wanted to yell out, "That's my grand-daughter." Instead, I went and gave her a big hug and kiss and then ran through the start line.
My coach had me train through this race, so I didn't have the freshest legs going into it. That's a good thing if I'm going to get through a full ironman.
The last two longer running races I did, I didn't do as well as I had hoped. So, with tired legs and coming off a couple "bad" races I wasn't sure what to expect.
I went in with the attitude I was going to push for a faster pace, about 5:45 min/km for as long as I could. I've been working on my mental muscles and pushing even when it's not comfortable. Not to the point of injury but pushing through the discomfort of a hard workout. My coach gives me enough of those, hard work outs, that I've had a lot of practice. I would do my best and take the results.
I executed my plan and had a great race. I was pretty much on goal pace. I walked through the 5 aid stations taking in some electrolytes each time. I was working hard and reaching my goal. My legs felt heavy from all the training during the week but I just pushed through.
I was super happy to finally have a good race under my belt.

Overall finish 103/175

Right after the race, I took off to Red Deer to watch Taylor do a Spartan Race. I wanted to be doing it with her so bad. This was one of the races I took off my list for the summer. Too much of a chance of getting hurt. Red Deer is my favorite Spartan venue. So, even though I couldn't be racing I was still happy to be there to support Taylor.
A day like today reminds me why I push myself to swim, bike, run, lift weights and all the other crazy things I do. Why I've chosen to eat plant based. I want to be an example to my kids and grandkids but mostly I want to have adventures with them.
