This was a new race to Calgary. It was a stadium obstacle course race. I didn't really know what I was getting myself into.
Jarom, Jordan and our student Sebastein did the race with me. Liam was supposed to do it but he broke his hand.
The race took place at the Stampede grounds in the grand stand area. We were assigned a heat in which there were about 100 people. Each heat was released 5 people at a time. That meant there weren't any line ups at the obstacles. As soon as our little group started the guys all took off and I was on my own.
Our first obstacle was tons of steps. Up and around in the grandstand both inside and out. It was a unique obstacle and hard on the knees. The rest of the obstacles were pretty typical of Spartans or the obstacles they have at Cor.fit. The course was fast as there wasn't any mud.
The most awesome obstacle was the axe throw. Impossible to get but pretty awesome to try.
The punishment for not doing an obstacle was either 20 burpees or 40 mountain climbers.
The best part of the race was that I finally, after 4 years, was able to do the rope!! When I ran up to it I just about went straight to the burpees but decided to have a better attitude and at least give it a try. There was no one else there and no one coming up behind me, so I didn't feel rushed at all. I got my feet wrapped around the rope. Grabbed with my hands, stood up and up I went! I reset and up I went again! I couldn't believe I was doing it. By the time I got to the top I was screaming, I was so excited that I actually got it. I slid down and was shouting and doing a happy dance. That was my goal this year to climb the rope and I did it!
An angle with this race is you can do multiple laps and get more blinge. Next year???
