It's that time of year again-SPARTAN TIME
This is the third year I have done the Calgary Spartan Race. This year our team consisted of Liam, Jarom, Emily, James, Taylor, Ric, and my nephew Jarren. I use the word team loosely. We didn't all run together only took before and after pictures together. It's always fun to have family to get pumped with before the race and rehash the gorry details with after.
The Calgary race is held at the Wildrose MX Park. It's hilly and this year super muddy. Calgary had so much rain in July and August and the week leading up to the race was no exception. However, the day was beautiful and dry.
They changed up the course this year adding some distance and a few new obstacles ie the rig.
My goal for this race was to run at my own pace even if that meant running alone. Run alone I did. Liam, Jarom and Jarren took off and I didn't see them until the finish line. I ran with the Dukeshires and Zaharchuks for a bit but then got ahead of them in the single track "river" through the bush. I was a bit worried about being on my own because I have always had Robin there to help me with the obstacles that I need a little boost with. It all worked out and forced me to do more on my own and the rest I just offered and asked for help. I enjoyed this years race more than in the past.
At the end they always have a fire to jump over. When I got to it the fire had gone out. The guy was trying to light it-there's a propane thing under the wood. Another racer was there at the same time, we both stopped, looked at each other and said we weren't runny the whole race to not get fire at the end. It only took about 30 seconds to get it going and when it started it was a huge flame.
Obstacles I missed requiring burpees
spear throw
balance beam
traverse wall-I got to the very last block and fell off
rope climb-it was after the barbed wire crawl and the rope was way too slippery otherwise I would have had it. JK
rig-I didn't get very far as my hands were so muddy
Favorite obstacle: monkey bars-usually I can't do them but I did this year, YEAH
Worst obstacle: barbed wire crawl- It felt like there was shards of glass under the mud-so bruised and cut up
