I bought new shoes a few weeks ago. LOVE them! Oh and they are pink. I can always run faster in pink shoes ; )
This is my third year to do this race and I absolutely love the Red Deer Super. I love the course. There is a lot of single track through a beautiful forest, hardly any hills and just the right length to be hard but not over the top challenging.
Jordan, Jarren, Emily and Jarom ran the race too. Liam had a broken hand and James was home with sick little girls. I was excited because Jody came with to watch and support us.
In the week leading up to the race the weather was horrible. It was cold and rainy, the forecast for the day was also cold and rainy. I didn't know if I could handle running that far in such cold wet weather. But, we lucked out. The day of the race was sunny, a bit chilly but no rain. It was a perfect day for running and even the water obstacles weren't too bad.
The course was muddy. Muddier than I have ever seen it. I had hoped to beat my time from two years ago but the extra mud prevented that.
Before the race season started this year I told my family I was going to run my own races and that I wasn't going to wait for anyone. I wanted to see what I could do if I ran my pace. This was Emily's first year doing the Super and James was signed up to do it with her. Like I said they had sick kids so James stayed home with them. I felt bad for Emily running her first Super all by herself. I had a dilemma, should I stay with her or just stick to my original plan. We talked about it and decided we would run together but if either of us wanted to go ahead we would call out to the other and just go. I set a pretty brisk pace and Emily kept up pretty good. It's always a competition between us with running. Sometimes she is faster than me and sometimes I am faster than her. We were able to help each other with the obstacles so it was a win win. I did have to slow down a bit towards the end so Emily could keep up. I'm glad I did because part of the spartan spirit is helping each other. For me it was a good mix of running my own race but also helping out. I'm going to have to watch out for Emily, I think I'm going to have a strong competitor next year.
I started working with a running coach several weeks ago and I have done tons of speed work. I have never done that before. I could tell a big difference today. I was able to just keep going and going. It was one of those races where everything comes together and you feel great.
The favorite part of the race was the slippery wall. It's a wall at a slant. There is a rope to help you pull yourself up. It's called slippery wall for a reason. It is usually after a mud obstacle and if not they douse it with dish soap. This slippery wall was ridiculous. The whole course was so muddy and there was a huge mud obstacle right before it. As I ran up to it there were tons of people at the top trying to pull people over, big buff guys trying to get up but then crashing down. I walked up to it, grabbed the rope and step, step, step, I was up and over. One of the buff guys was offering a hand over but I just flipped over the top and was done. One of the volunteers burst out laughing and said, "Hmm, I guess that's how it's done."

This is basically what it looked like but imagine ten more people up at the top helping, ten more people trying to get up and the ropes and wall covered in mud. Then, imagine me in my fast pink shoes blasting past.
Another race done, one more to go.
