This was the first year for me to do the Vulcan Tinman. It's a great local race in a small town with tons of support.
Jody and the kids are always such a great support for me when I'm racing but I can't expect them to come to everything. This was one of those days. I was all on my own.
The drive to Vulcan was stunning, flat prairies with crops growing. I grew up in Lethbridge and my mom and I drove to Calgary a lot. We always went through Vulcan so the day brought back childhood memories. The flat prairies will always feel like home for me.
I was amazed by the number of people participating in the race. As I was driving in it was fun to see all the cars with bikes on them heading to the same place as me.
My goal for today was to smile and cheer on other racers as much as I could. I accomplished my goal.
The longest distance for this race was the sprint, which is the distance I did. It was my kick off tri for the year.
One word for this race...windy. I guess I shouldn't have expected much else from southern Alberta. It was so tough on the bike. There was a strong gusty side wind. I think I was slanted to compensate the bike leg. When the wind would let up I felt like I was going to tip right over. Then another gust and I thought I was going either into traffic or off the side of the road.
When I got to the finish line they were not handing out medals. Now, some people don't care about medals..I'm not one of them. I love getting a medal. They had given the kids medals and I was tempted to snag one from them. Just kidding.
They had the best dj at the race. I think he was announcing some peoples names but he played the best music and super loud. He was an older man and was so into it, dancing a bit and never letting the music stop.
