I have wanted to bike the Highwood pass for a few years. Highwood Pass is the highest paved pass in Canada, travelling through Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. A section of the road is closed to cars between December 1st and June 15th. I was determined to make this year the year! When some of my work colleagues found out I was going to do it they wanted to come. This was great as it held me accountable.
Four of us, Carmen, Trish, Carly, and myself were starting from the south side and Meriah was starting from the north side. We planned on meeting up at some point. I drove out with Carly and we had a few issues finding the south starting point. We finally made it and met up with Carmen and Trish.
As soon as we started we were climbing. Poor Trish was on a mountain bike and quickly felt the effects of that. To her credit she made it the whole way. It was a great ride. We would go up, up, up then sore down only to climb again. We kept expecting to see Meriah but she was no were to be found. Carmen and I stopped to talk to some other bikers and they told us we had another hour of steep uphill to the summit and that it was still blocked by snow. That was the reason we didn't find Meriah she couldn't make it through. We decided to turn around and head back.
What a ride back! Flying down as fast as possible. At one point some lady was yelling at us. I thought I heard the word bear but honestly was just focusing on staying on my bike. We later found out there was a bear beside the road, not an uncommon sighting.
